Why not order a healthy takeaway

Everyone loves a good takeaway and our appetite for takeaway food always remains strong. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing as there are many options available for healthy takeaway.

Indian takeaway

When it comes to food that is high in fat, Indian takeaway usually tops the list. However, there are plenty of delicious healthy inidan choices available that are not high in fat. When choosing your choice of bread to go with the dish, the healthiest option is chapatti. This is simply flat bread made from wholemeal flour and water. Breads such as naan and paranthas are coated with butter and enriched with sugars and fats and occasionally are stuffed with fillings so it is best to avoid these breads. If you are ordering rice then choose brown rice if available otherwise plain or boiled/steamed rice is just as healthy. Try and avoid pilau rice as this can be quite high on calories.
If curry is your dish and you like them hot, always order a raita as a side dish. This is made from natural yoghurt and cucumber and will keep your mouth cool and help with digestion of the curry, a much healthier alternative to glasses of lager or beer.
Pizza
Pizza is normally quite high in fat. However, certain steps can be taken to make ordering takeaway pizza healthier. Firstly, always choose thin crust pizza rather than deep pan and order a size smaller than normal. When it comes to choosing toppings, the healthy friendly pizza is a simple margherita. If you want to add additional toppings then go for vegetables, tuna or chicken and avoid fatty meats like pepperoni and spicy beef or pork toppings.

Some pizza takeaway's offer reduced fat cheese as a topping which is a healthy alternative to normal cheese.
Healthy alternatives for starters include sweetcorn or crab soup. For your main course you should include stir-fries or dishes cooked in an oyster or black bean sauce. Always order plain boiled rice to accompany the dish.
Fish & Chips
This may sound surprising but fish and chips can be one of the healthiest options when it comes to takeaway food! When choosing make sure you have thicker cut chips as they absorb less fat while they're cooking and taste better. Cod and plaice are good choices of fish – but haddock is the best as it is a fish that is rich in iodine which helps to stimulate the metabolism. If you remove the batter you have steamed fish. Always avoid the fatty meat choices including pies and sausages.

Chinese takeaway
The bad news is Chinese takeaway favourites such as spring rolls and prawn toast are unhealthy choices because these favourites are deep fried, prawn crackers are also fried so it is wise to resist them if you can. Also out are favourites such as sweet and sour sauce and battered dishes and special/fried rice and noodle dishes, all unhealthy options if you are looking for a tasty takeaway.
